Australian imported spodumene: the most important raw material for lithium carbonate and other lithium products

The production technology of lithium carbonate from spodumene is mature, and the product quality is stable and reliable. The chemical composition of spodumene raw materials is relatively stable, with fewer impurities, and low impurity content except for silicon and aluminum. Therefore, the process is easy to control, and the product quality is stable and reliable. The production process of lithium carbonate from spodumene is flexible and can achieve the simultaneous production of multiple lithium compounds. Based on the above reasons, spodumene (especially imported from Australia) remains the main raw material for lithium carbonate and other lithium products in China. According to research, the main components and physical properties of lithium pyroxene raw materials produced by Talison Lithium Australia Limited are as follows:

Composition table

Note: The first type of heavy metal pollutants (lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium, arsenic) were not detected.

Note: According to the all element and radioactive detection report of spodumene, the single nuclide content of uranium series (238U) and thorium series (232Th) in spodumene is lower than the exempted value (1Bq/g)

Spodumene is one of the main lithium containing minerals, also known as type 2 spodumene, belonging to the monoclinic system. The crystals are often columnar, granular or brick like, with a glassy luster. The color is gray white, gray green, purple or yellow, with a hardness of 6.5-7.0 and a density of 3.03-3.22g/cm3. Spodumene is mainly produced in lithium rich granite pegmatites, with coexisting minerals such as quartz, albite, and microcline. Crystals change color when heated or exposed to ultraviolet radiation, and lose their luster under sunlight. When roasted to around 950 ℃, it rapidly transforms into β Type spodumene with thermal cracking properties. As a raw material for lithium chemical products, spodumene is widely used in the lithium chemical, glass, and ceramic industries.

The main production processes for lithium carbonate from spodumene include lime sintering method and sulfuric acid method, among which sulfuric acid method is currently the main method used.
